We’ve been shut down from several businesses because they either don’t like marketing agencies or have had a bad experience with them.
I’ve heard stories such as “we’ve been charged $3000 a month for SEO and have had no results, and little to no communication”. I’ve also recently heard of a business who has been stuck in a contract for their website, where they’ve been charged far too much and have had no reprieve getting out of the contract (which was also far too long).
So how do you choose the right agency that won’t burn you, or rip you off?
Or, is having an in-house marketer the best option?
The capabilities of a marketing agency are often far greater than having an in-house marketer. This means you can get a better bang for your buck engaging with an agency. Marketing Agencies will often have a team of specialists across graphic design, web development, social media management, pay-per-click management and even SEO. All these skill sets are hard to replicate in an in-house environment. You’ll often find that large businesses who have in-house marketing teams will still outsource some of their work to agencies.
There’s an old adage in business of finding what you’re not good at and paying someone better than you to do it. The same goes for marketing. Being a business owner of any scale requires a lot of hard work and dedication. While you’re focused on bringing new customers in, often key aspects of a business’s success, such as marketing, can take a step back. An agency can be a great option to take that stress away and let you focus on what you’re good at.
Choosing an agency can give you a fresh perspective on your business. Sometimes the best ideas come from an objective standpoint. That’s not to say that having an in-house marketer who is right in the thick of it in the day-to-day running of your business is also of benefit, but sometimes it can create an element of tunnel vision, where it’s hard to be creative when you’re doing the same thing every day.
Having an in-house marketer can also have its benefits. You’ll often be able to make faster decisions on your marketing strategies and efforts, turnaround time may be faster, and you’ll can upscale your skill set by focusing on one industry. If this is your preference, then this may be the best option.
